PhD Program Thesis Defense Procedure

Step 1. The first draft is approved by the advisor, and the graduation requirements are confirmed to be met. After completing the first draft of the thesis, the content must be approved by the advisor before proceeding to the next step.

  • Graduation Requirements
  1. Completion of required credits: 18/30 credits (30 credits for students enrolled after 2023)
  2. Completion of academic ethics course
  3. Academic paper publication: At least one academic paper must be published in a journal indexed by SCI, SSCI, TSSCI, or AHCI as the first author (excluding the advisor). A copy of the published paper or an acceptance letter must be provided. Papers submitted for qualification exams are not accepted.
  4. Participation in international academic conferences: Attend at least one international academic conference and present the paper in English through an oral presentation.
  5. Meet the English proficiency requirement (B2 level or above)

  1. The completed coursework must meet the following requirements.
  1. Required core courses: Seminar (I), Seminar (II) (0 credits).
  2. "Research Methodology" field: At least 3 credits must be taken from the following courses, including: Advanced Educational Statistics (3 credits), Qualitative Research Methods (3 credits), Experimental Research Methods (3 credits), Design-Based Research Methods (3 credits), etc. Additional courses may be counted as elective credits.
  3. Professional elective courses: At least 3 credits must be taken from the "Digital Learning Psychology and Strategies" field, including: Philosophy of Science (3 credits), Online Inquiry-Based Learning (3 credits), Test Theory (3 credits), Technology and Language Teaching (3 credits), Digital Learning System Design (3 credits), Integrating Information Technology into Instruction (3 credits), Psychology of Online Learning (3 credits), Information Literacy Research (3 credits), Digital Collaborative Learning (3 credits), Motivation and Learning (3 credits), etc. Additional courses taken can be counted toward elective credits.

Step 2. Confirm the date and time of the oral defense.

Contact the oral defense committee members to schedule the date and time of the oral defense.

[Video Defense] According to the university's Academic Affairs Office policy, all defenses must be conducted in person. If special circumstances require a video defense, please contact the GIDLE office in advance to apply.

Step 3. Reserve an oral defense classroom

Please inquire with the department office about available classrooms. If you are unable to come to campus, please ask a fellow student for assistance.

To reserve Room 401-1 or 401-2, contact the GIDLE office (Room 605);To reserve Room 701 or 836, contact the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Office (Room 705).

Step 4. Prepare the required paper application documents and submit them to the GIDLE office [at least one month before the oral defense].

Please refer to the announcements on the department website (all documents must be submitted in hard copy):

  • D-4-1 Doctoral Dissertation Examination Application Form (students should download from the Student Information System and have it signed by their advisor or authorize the GIDLE office to stamp it)
  • D-4-2 Doctoral Dissertation Recommendation Form (students should download from the Student Information System and have it signed by their advisor or authorize the GIDLE office to stamp it)
  • D-4-3 List of Doctoral Degree Examination Committee Members (students should download from the Student Information System and have it signed by their advisor or authorize the GIDLE office to stamp it)
  • Thesis First Draft and Abstract (no binding required; must include cover page, title page, advisor recommendation letter, committee approval form, Chinese abstract and keywords, English abstract and keywords, acknowledgments, table of contents, list of symbols, list of figures, list of tables, main text, references, and appendices)
  • D-5 Academic Transcript (to be printed at the 1st floor of the Administration Building)

Instructions for operation

Step 5. Send the invitation letter & thesis by yourself [Complete at least 2 weeks before the oral defense]
Please prepare envelopes and other necessary materials yourself. Pick up the invitation letters for the committee members from the GIDLE office, and send the invitation letters along with the thesis first draft to the committee members; electronic copies can also be sent.

Step 6. Confirm committee members’ parking needs [Complete at least 1 week before the oral defense]
Please confirm whether the committee members require parking. If needed, you can obtain parking tickets from the GIDLE office.

Step 7. Post the oral defense poster [Complete at least 2 days before the oral defense]
Design the oral defense poster yourself and have it printed at the GIDLE office. Post the poster at the 6th-floor elevator entrance and at the door of the oral defense classroom.

Step 8. Prepare oral defense documents [Complete at least 2 days before the oral defense]
Log in to the Taiwan Tech Student Information System under “Personal Information” → “Thesis and Advisor Data Entry,” print the documents after online registration, and prepare them.

  • D-7-1 Doctoral Dissertation Recommendation Form – 1 copy
  • D-7-2 Qualification Form dy Doctoral Degree Examination Committee – 1 copy (Advisor must sign in both the committee member section and advisor section; other committee members must sign in the committee member section)
  • D-7-3 Thesis Defense Examination Evaluation Form(Doctoral Degree) (number of committee members)
  • D-7-4 GraduateStudentThesisAcademicEthicsandAuthenticationofOriginalityStatement
  • D-8 Oral Defense Receipt for Thesis Proposal (please be sure to refer to the instructions on the first page of the file and print it yourself)

Instructions for operation

Step 9. Conduct the oral defense
Complete the degree oral defense before the deadline set for the semester.

Step 10. Submit oral defense documents for record [Within 2 working days after the oral defense]
After the oral defense is completed, please submit the documents from Step 8 to the GIDLE office within 2 working days.

  • Completion of the above steps means passing the degree oral defense. Please proceed with the departure procedures only after revising the thesis.
  • Please discuss with your advisor as early as possible to complete the thesis writing and follow the procedures to apply accordingly.
