Educational Research Methodology

Required

The goal of the course is to help beginning researchers to design and conduct educational and social science research successfully, for proposals, master theses or doctoral dissertations. Course content and requirements are therefore both theory and application oriented, with individual and group work, together with paper work and presentation.
Education Literature Review

This course focuses on literature of selected topics in educational research. The instructor will guide students through an in-depth analysis of the literature and explore potential research questions for future studies.

 

Spatial Cognition and Creativity

1.To explore related theories and research of spatial ability.
2.To know factors of spatial ability and their representations and applications.
3.To design measures, games, toys, activities, experiments or field exhibitions of spatial ability.

 

Information Sociology

Optional

1.To recognize the similarities and differences between traditional, modern and postmodern theories of society, particularly those regarding the Internet and cyberspace and their effects on culture, community, and the individual.
2. To familiarize sociological theories and literature applied in the course.
3. To critically examine raised questions in class through selected course reading assignments, discussions, and a team research work.

 

Survey Method and Statistics

This course provides in-depth training and experience in developing questionnaires and introduces basic statistical concepts. This course focuses on four major topics: 1. concepts and strategies for constructing and assessing questionnaires, 2. questions and item development,3.pilot test and analysis of survey data, and 4.basic statistical concepts, including distribution, correlation, sampling, t-test, ANOVA, factor analysis, reliability, validity, and missing data analysis.

 

Constructivism and Education

This course will explore the theory of constructivism through the perspectives of psychology, philosophy and sociology. The course content will cover: the theory of constructivism, the principles of constructivism, constructivist learning environments, conceptual change and the debates of constructivism. This course will also address how to use constructivism in teaching practice, such as the practice of science education and e-learning.

 

 

Online Inquiry Learning

This course aims at utilizing eye-tracking techniques to explore students’ online inquiry learning behaviors and information processing models. The curriculum will emphasize on exploring and examining online learners’ interactions with various digital learning platforms and contents. This is a project-based course, focusing on conducting an eye-tracking experiment. Students taking this course will be acquainted with the implications of eye-tracking techniques in digital learning studies, and also know how to operate an eye-tracker, design an eye-tracking experiment, collect and analyze eye-tracking data as well as write a brief experimental report. This is an advanced interdisciplinary course of digital learning and cognitive psychology.
